This guide is for people who know that they want to make games but don't know where to start. The first thing you have to think about is what direction you wish to travel. Do you like art or do you want to learn how to code. Maybe you want to work the business side of things or jam out on your keyboard all day long. If you are starting a small independent company out of your living room or are just a hobbyist then you might want to know more than just how to code or make an awesome drawing in Photoshop.

Coders
If you want to learn how to program I recommend learning C++ and C#. After you learn C# you can download a copy of XNA and start making games for the X-Box 360. If you choose to learn C++, which I highly recommend, you probably won't be making video games for at least a year. If you choose C# you can start making games with XNA. I do however recommend that you learn how to program in C# before starting XNA. It will make the experience a lot easier. You can download a free version of C#, C++, and XNA at Microsoft's web site.

If you want to start making games right now I recommend checking out a 2d game engine called Torque Game Builder from Garage Games. If you are new to coding do not get Torque Game Engine. Torque Game Engine has a bigger learning curve than Torque Game Builder which can be overwhelming for people just starting out.

Artists
If you want to make graphics you must first learn how to draw. Unfortunately my words can not help you with this skill. You also must be good with Photoshop and preferably Illustrator or Corel Draw. If you don't have a budget you can check out the Making Graphics Without a Budget guide. I do however recommend getting the software as soon as you get the money.

If you would like to 3D model I recommend, if you are a student, getting 3ds Max or Maya. You can get a student license for as low as $100. If you can't get your hands on Maya or Max then you can get Blender for free.
